A comparison of Plate and Expansion Tectonic reconstructions at various times in the past.
The videos show rotating globes starting at the present day (0 Ma) and then going back in 10 million year increments (10 Ma, 20 Ma, 30 Ma, etc.). Click on a video to start it rotating. Right click and select loop to constantly repeat the animation. Click on the title to view a larger version on YouTube.
The Plate Tectonic reconstruction is on the left (remaining at a constant Earth diameter) while the Expansion Tectonic reconstruction is on the right (reducing in diameter further back in time). Various gores gradually open up in the Plate Tectonic reconstructions as they go further back in time, particularly around the Asia to India region, while the Expansion Tectonic reconstructions maintain a relatively continuous crust.
Click on the Plate Tectonic or Expansion Tectonic links on the right of an animation to open the globes in Google Earth.
